Arteta Warns Fitness Crisis Could Undermine Arsenal's Trophy Quest
Arsenal's manager has voiced fears that his squad's chase for honors this season is being jeopardized by a worrying circle of fitness setbacks and a relentless schedule.
Latest Squad Update
Key midfielder Declan Rice missed the midweek trip to face Club Brugge due to illness. In addition, attacker Leandro Trossard and center-back William Saliba are still unavailable.
There was, on a brighter note, positive news regarding Gabriel Jesus, with the Brazilian striker registered to their Champions League squad. He replaces the hurt youngster Max Dowman, who suffered an foot problem.
"Training, no because we don't have time to train. But obviously the fact that you are missing players, you are placing demands on other players more, there's a knock-on effect to that and it's a really vicious cycle."
Dowman's issue is the latest in a extensive series of fitness problems for the North London side. Since the beginning of last season, they have suffered 95 injuries, the second-highest total in the Premier League.
Extended Absentees
- Defenders Cristhian Mosquera and Gabriel Magalhães are unlikely to return until 2025.
- Midfielder Kai Havertz continues to rehabilitate from knee and "requires more time," according to the manager.
Arteta rejected the idea that training methods were to blame, pointing to a shortage of time for drills. He highlighted the strain on fit players, some of whom have featured over 150 games in two seasons.
Transfer Plans
Despite a major off-season spend exceeding £250 million, Arteta insisted the team is unlikely planning to enter the January recruitment market.
"At the moment we're just focusing on bringing the players back and hopefully it will be a question of a short time," he commented. "We know how crucial those coming weeks are going to be."
Looking Ahead
The squad suffered their first loss in 18 matches at the weekend, reducing their lead at the top of the league to two clear points.
Attention now turns to the Champions League, where a sixth group win would virtually secure a top-eight place. Winger Gabriel Martinelli could make a club record by scoring in a fifth consecutive European match.
"The team is frustrated with the result, but we have to keep going," he stated. "This isn't like all is going badly because we lost one game. So we stick together."
