California is Fully Drought-Free for the First Time in 25 Years.
Following 25 long years, no portion of the state is experiencing drought conditions. This landmark event arrives after difficult years marked by below-average rain that exacerbated fire dangers and pressured its massive agricultural sector.
A Map Shows An Absence of Dryness
A recent update from the federal monitoring program showed that California in its entirety is clear of dry or drought conditions. This shift came after multiple above-normal rainfall that topped up major reservoirs like Shasta and Oroville exceeding their historic averages.
“If you’re 25 or younger you’ve spent your life in a world where California has been in or emerging from drought,” stated a climate scientist.
After Severe Systems to Wet Holidays
Achieving this status included severe and lethal winter storms that struck the state in 2023, causing significant overflow, electrical failures, and tragic losses. Even though those events began to alleviate the drought, they fell short of ending it.
As late as late December, regions like northeastern California were considered unusually parched. Substantial precipitation at the onset of 2026 eliminated those final dry conditions.
Essential Mountain Snowfall Presents a Challenge
But, experts warn that the end of drought status does not mean having no water worries. Current readings of the high-elevation snow indicate it is approximately 70 percent of the average for this date.
This frozen reservoir, which provides about a third of the state's usable water as it runs off, is a critical factor for the year ahead. State experts stress that it is not yet time to determine the outlook for the coming year.
“The trend we’re looking at right now is a higher ratio of rain to snow,” said a state water resources manager. “We’d like to see the snow accumulation to increase by the start of April so that we’re closer to average.”
Although the monitor indicates no dryness, attention turns to preserving this precious water balance during the rest of the year.
