California's Governor Confirms He Is Evaluating a White House Bid in 2028
Gavin Newsom, a leading member of the Democratic party, has revealed that he intends to determine whether to run for president in 2028 following the 2026 elections are over.
"Yeah, I couldn't be truthful if I said no," the governor remarked when pressed about seriously considering a presidential run after the 2026 midterms. "I'd just be lying. And I won't do that."
The governor's current term as governor concludes in early 2027, and he is ineligible for re-election. Yet, he emphasized that any determination is not imminent.
"Fate will determine that," he said.
Growing Prominence as a Administration Opponent
Newsom has stepped forward as a notable opponent of the current federal leadership, using his social media accounts and pushing a ballot measure that would boost Democratic House seats in following GOP gerrymandering. This action has made him a target from political opponents.
Federal Funding Dispute
Donald Trump's secretary of transportation, Sean Duffy, accused that Newsom shows no concern about the state's residents in a recent appearance on Fox News. Duffy announced intentions to withhold federal funds from California and suggested eliminating the authority to provide trucking licenses.
"I intend to cut a significant sum from California," Duffy stated, after a this week's deadly accident in California involving an unauthorized commercial driver that caused three deaths and four injuries.
His administration noted that the U.S. government had approved the worker's status repeatedly, which permitted him to receive a commercial driver's license under federal law.
The transportation secretary had earlier indicated he was holding back $40 million from California for not enforcing English language requirements for commercial drivers.
Strong Response from the Governor's Office
"Former D-list reality star, now Secretary of Transportation, fails to grasp U.S. regulations," his administration retorted in a recent comment addressing the funding warnings. "In the meantime, in contrast to this person, we rely on data: The state's commercial driver's license holders had a fatal crash rate significantly lower than the countrywide rate. Texas – the sole state with more commercial holders – has a rate substantially higher than California. Statistics are clear. The Trump administration does."
Polling Data and Political Future
A this month's poll found that 72% of Democrats and almost half of voters believed that Newsom ought to campaign for president in 2028. In recent years, public support for the governor has grown to an typical level of a third from previous levels, while his disapproval has dropped from an average of previous highs to current figures.
Some time ago, Newsom stated while on a trip several key regions that he had "uncertainty" about his plans for the next presidential election.
He also referenced his personal struggles, including being diagnosed with dyslexia at the age of five.
"The idea that a person who had modest test scores, who still struggles to read scripts, who was always in the back of the classroom – the fact that this is even suggested is, in and of itself, amazing," he stated. "Who the hell knows? I am eager to see who steps forward in 2028 and who rises to the occasion. And that is the issue for the American people."
