The acclaimed broadcaster and filmmaker, Sir Humphrey Burton, has passed away at 94 years old.
He died peacefully at home, surrounded by his family.

Born in Trowbridge, Wiltshire, in 1931, Burton became one of the industry’s most respected broadcasters, introducing the wonder of classical music to the wider audience.
His tenure as the BBC's head of music and arts in the 1960s and 70s was marked by award-winning work, including the programme The Golden Ring.
He also founded the Young Musician of the Year competition in 1978, a platform that spotlighted soloists such as violinist Nicola Benedetti.

He also was instrumental in launching a significant television broadcaster and was the editor and presenter of the programme Aquarius.
He received three British Academy awards and four Emmy awards, and was honoured with a knighthood in the 2020 New Year Honours.
In his 2021 autobiography, he expressed a hope for broadcasters to take risks with new music programmes, lamenting a decline in audience for talent competitions.
