As stated by a ex- high-ranking official from the Metropolitan police, police departments are now required to publicly share the ethnic backgrounds of suspects in response to a rise in far-right speculation on online networks.

Recent Incident: Train Stabbing in a UK County

On Sunday morning, British Transport Police reported the arrest of two men following a multiple knife attacks on a railway carriage in Cambridgeshire. An individual, a British citizen of black heritage aged 32, and a second, a 35-year-old of Caribbean descent, were taken into custody. Later, the older suspect was released with no charges, and authorities confirmed he had no connection in the attack.

New Guidance to Combat Misinformation

In August, new guidelines were rolled out to tackle the dissemination of false narratives on digital platforms, which had escalated after the tragic murder of three schoolgirls in a English town last summer.

Yet, campaigners warned that this move could unintentionally encourage an overemphasis on the racial background of suspects and spark further rightwing conspiracy theories when details are withheld with the general population.

Dal Babu, who served in the Metropolitan Police, described the need for law enforcement to disclose the race of individuals in incidents involving ethnic minorities as an "unforeseen outcome".

“At the time the guidelines were introduced, I cautioned that there might be a risk of police being expected to disclose details in every instance,” he said.

He expressed understanding for his ex-peers in the police, noting that they are “damned if they do and damned if they don’t”. “They are under pressure because there is such intense speculation from the far right on social media after every major incident about the background of suspects.”

Political Reaction

Ben Obese-Jecty, whose district includes the area where the train halted, called it “unfortunate” but necessary for authorities to quickly disclose the ethnicities of those detained.

“I don’t like it. I understand why they do it. I think they actually have to do it now,” he commented, adding that online platforms are used to push agendas, making it critical for police to provide accurate information to counter rumors.

Extremist Manipulation of Events

Prior to the police announcement, right-leaning politicians had demanded a quicker action. As an example, the shadow home secretary urged for prompt sharing of suspect information, while the Reform UK leader posted on X that the public should be informed “without delay”.

Additionally, extremist profiles online attempted to exploit the incident. A profile named “British Patriot”—with nearly 5,000 followers—circulated an baseless allegation that a individual with a blade had been shouting a religious phrase.
