Meteorologists are saying an icy commencement to the new year, with snowfall likely across much of the UK. Celebrants are advised to bundle up as near-freezing temperatures are forecast for New Year's Eve.

Festive Celebrations Continue In Spite of Warnings

Edinburgh's iconic Hogmanay events are planned to take place, a contrast to last year's postponement. This is in spite of weather alerts for snow in northern Scotland.

"A chilly New Year's Eve night for those out celebrating, so extra layers will be essential," said the Met Office.

Displays Under Clear but Chilly Skies

Across the UK, the weather is expected to be suited to fireworks displays, with no rain and good visibility. Readings are expected to be low, so extra layers essential, according to forecasters.

Further north, conditions will be cloudier, but this is not expected to impact visibility for watching fireworks. "It won't be low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," commented one forecaster.

Broad Weather Alerts for Friday

Moving into Friday, snow alerts are active for Northern Ireland and stretching from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and through to London and most of the south-east of England.

• Disruptions and cancellations are likely on trains and buses.

The Mercury Set to Plummet Even More

With the start of 2026, it will be "frosty everywhere where you are," stated forecaster Simon Partridge. Conditions are set to plummet as snow and gale-force winds are predicted to batter the north of the country.

Around 10cm of snow is forecast to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, reaching up to 30cm on the top roads and uplands.

Public Health Warnings Released

Meanwhile, amber-level health advisories have been activated for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to continue until noon on 5 January, with the mercury forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.

The health agency stated this indicated the weather was likely to lead to notable consequences across medical and care provision. This includes a expected uptick in the fatality numbers among vulnerable individuals or those aged 65 or over.

The advice for all is clear: to celebrate the new year in good health, dressing for the cold is absolutely key.
