NY Introduces Portal for Citizens to Share ICE Videos Following Arrests of 4 US Citizens
New York state attorney general has introduced a new reporting form urging residents to share photos and videos of ICE operations around the state. This step comes just a day after a significant ICE raid rattled Chinatown in Manhattan, sparking widespread demonstrations.
American Citizens Arrested During Enforcement Action
A congressional representative announced during a news conference that four American citizens were detained and kept for "almost a full day" after the previous day's operation. Protests erupted in New York on consecutive evenings.
"Each citizen has the right to exist without intimidation," state officials stated in a announcement.
"For those who saw and documented ICE activity yesterday, I urge you to submit that footage with my office. We are committed to examining these accounts and investigating any wrongdoings."
Portal Features
The portal offers spaces to send photos and videos of the operation, as well as a area to note where it occurred. When submitting, individuals must mark a box that states that "the attorney general may use any materials, images, or footage in a public document, such as in a court case or public report."
Details of the Manhattan Operation
The Manhattan operation, which observers say involved more than 50 federal agents, took place in a famous neighborhood of the city where counterfeit handbags, accessories, jewelry and merchandise are sold daily widely – frequently to sightseers.
Recordings of the incident depict multiple masked and armed federal agents zip-tying and detaining a person, and pushing back bystanders. Masses of locals pursued the personnel through the streets. An armored military vehicle was observed rolling through the Manhattan avenues.
Official Reactions
During a midweek briefing organized with the rights organization, Representative Goldman, a Democratic representative, announced that four nationals were detained by ICE for nearly 24 hours and that there were "no situations where US citizens should be taken for no reason." He clarified the individuals were released on Wednesday with no legal action taken.
"The intent is obvious here. It is not focused on deporting lawbreakers," the congressman stated. "This constitutes a armed campaign to create conflict. It is simply a justification to incite violence for the government to utilize the military to stop unrest that they have created."
Extensive Outcry
Anger over the immigration operation rapidly grew – every NYC mayor hopefuls denounced the incident, as did NY's governor.
"Once again, the federal government selects oppressive displays that instill panic, instead of protection. It must stop," one mayoral candidate wrote.
New York City community groups spoke out too.
"Federal officers raided the neighborhood with military-style vehicles, masked agents and riot gear to go after small merchants attempting to earn income. This action had no connection to community security and was entirely about intimidating residents and areas," said the president of a advocacy group.
ICE Policies
Agency rules prohibits the detention of US citizens and the organization has claimed it will not apprehend citizens. Yet, investigative journalism has found that over 170 citizens have been held against their will by immigration authorities during the period of the current administration.
Current Situation
ICE raids have been becoming more common in New York and across the US this year.
An October operation in the city center was the earliest reported action on an refuge facility of the current administration. Rallies targeting federal operations are commonplace as are allegations of force and abusive practices.
Recently, a submission submitted by civil rights groups alleged inadequate care of women with child in government custody.
