Scream Original Star the Actor Fears He Could Ruin the Series with Scream 7.
The highly anticipated horror film Scream 7 is set to arrive in theaters in the coming year, and it is gearing up for a massive gathering of familiar faces. This latest installment marks the legendary comeback of Neve Campbell as survivor Sidney Prescott, after sitting out the previous film. She will, per tradition, be alongside Courtney Cox as journalist Gail Weathers, but they won't be the only beloved characters making a comeback.
"Coming back to a character you played in your twenties when you're 55 was a daunting task that kept me up at night," the actor admits.
An Unexpected Return for Fallen Favorites
It has been established that a trio of distinct characters from earlier films are slated to reappear in this latest sequel, despite dying in prior movies. The precise method of their return remains a mystery. Audiences should get ready for the return of the endearing and nearly unkillable officer Dewey Riley, the director and Scream 3 antagonist Roman Bridger, and a member of the original murderous duo, Stu Macher.
The Pressure of Legendary Legacy
For Matthew Lillard, reprising his role in the series for the first time since a brief appearance is a long-held wish, even if he is terrified about the audience response. The actor vividly recalls the precise instant he got the offer from the original writer.
"I remember the phone call. I remember the small talk. I remember him asking. That instance is indelibly imprinted on my psyche," he states. "Therefore I'm really proud to be back. I'm thrilled to be back."
Stu Macher has attained cult status in the years since the 1996 movie premiered, which made Lillard feeling very nervous.
"Truthfully, that's a role that lives in infamy, like it or not," he explains. "A character that is now embodied in every single Scream mask that walks around every October 31st."
The Anxiety of Disappointing the Fans
Now that filming has wrapped, Lillard is waiting as everyone else to see the finished film. He confesses to feeling immense pressure about hoping not to be the one who ruins the beloved franchise.
"It's either a success and people are thrilled to have you, or it's a miss," Lillard observes. "Going into it, I don't know if the film will gonna work. I don't know if people are eager to see me. I've certainly seen enough people state and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they returning to this idea?' So the reality is that I feel a lot of responsibility to not mess up the series. I don't want people exiting Scream 7 and thinking, 'Well, that sucked, and Matthew Lillard was the cause.'"
Speculation and Anticipation Abound
While countless dedicated fans are excited for Stu's reappearance, the big question of how he and the others come back persists. Maybe they live as manifestations in Sidney's consciousness, like a prior storyline. Or, perhaps they are somehow still living in a strange communal situation. The possibility of a meta-horror narrative, reminiscent of earlier genre films, also exists.
Moviegoers will find out the truth when Scream 7 debuts in theaters.
