The Details Known Regarding the Fatalities of the Bondi Terror Attack

At least 16 lives lost their lives and in excess of 40 were hurt when attackers fired on a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, an incident local police have labeled a act of terrorism.

In the latest update, authorities have stated the number of fatalities is 16, which includes one of the suspected gunmen. Moreover, 42 injured people were taken to hospital.

The victims have not yet been officially identified, but police believe their ages range between 10 and 87 years old.

Below are the victims who have been named so far.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Described as a father of five children, he worked as the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and acquaintances remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a family member said.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.

She recounted the moments before the shooting, saying they had been standing together when the gunfire started. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she stated.

The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having endured unspeakable terror in their youth. They had later relocated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

In a statement, a senior official said that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the statement continued.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was a fatality during the attack, according to multiple sources referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people taken to hospitals, a significant number are still receiving treatment, with a number in serious condition. The injured include two officers who attended the scene.

One of the injured is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the gunmen. Called a hero, he received gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Sources state he was wounded and is receiving treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he described the incident as an “utter carnage,” but also praised the actions of those who came to assist. He said he felt it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the attack. He told reporters he listened to “a large number” of gunshots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
