In a decisive runoff election, far-right candidate José Antonio Kast has won the presidential office in Chile.

A Clear-Cut Triumph

With more than 99% of ballots counted, Kast secured 58.17% of the ballots, beating leftist former minister Jeannette Jara, who received 41.83%.

This signifies Kast's third bid for the presidency, having earlier been lost by the current president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 final vote.

Campaign Centered On Security and Migration

Recognized for his strong socially conservative views and regard for the era of former leader Augusto Pinochet, Kast's platform was mostly focused on promises to tackle increasing crime and significantly reduce migration.

He frequently pointed to migrants, notably the approximately 330,000 unauthorized individuals in Chile, for security issues. During the race, he gave an ultimatum for them to exit before the new term begins or face deportation.

His policy ideas envisioned controversial measures such as erecting camps, border walls, security fences, and strengthening the military presence on the northernmost border.

Many commentators view Kast's victory as part of a broader conservative trend in Latin America, following this year's electoral wins in nations like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.

However, other experts additionally describe it as a continuation of the regular alternation of power between left-wing and right leadership since Chile's establishment of democracy in 1990.

Governing Without a Solid Majority

In spite of his decisive electoral win, Kast will not have an absolute majority in Congress, neither in the lower house or the Senate, even if various rightwing parties are counted together.

This legislative reality could hinder his agenda, such as a pledge to reduce public spending by billions within 18 months—a proposal for which he has not offered concrete steps.

"There are numerous things about what a Kast administration will operate that we don't know because he has not explained his methods for implement them," commented a political analyst.

The professor added, "On the economy, it is highly probable we will see adjustment measures associated with the right. However where there is far less uncertainty is on law and order, because that has been his central theme across the race."
