Fresh analysis indicates that individuals who come off new slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional lifestyle programs.
Research printed in a major medical journal shows that while obese individuals can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"People purchasing these drugs should be aware of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain suggests a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about one and a half years.
Comparing Therapies
The analysis, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of the injectable medications with other pills.
Researchers point out that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally see a less rapid weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
The Reason for the Rapid Rebound
Experts believe the mode of action of the injections accounts for the heightened regain.
The injections imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.
"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than normal might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating much more probable."
A Chronic Issue?
The NHS recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians say that, given the high risk of relapse, the therapy might need to be long-term.
This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "underscore the long-term character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
User Experiences
Individuals who have come off the medication report a powerful resurgence of cravings.
"It felt as if a switch that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," described an individual.
The struggle is worsened if individuals have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Growing Use
Survey data suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.
- Use is higher among females compared to men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
- Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, experts emphasize that while these medications are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and maintained weight loss hinges on integrated lifestyle management.
